Finding out if your child is dyslexic

Target Dyslexia can undertake assessments for parents who suspect that their child might be dyslexic.

The first step in this process is an evaluation of your child by a registered Dyslexia Tutor. If there is cause to warrant further investigation, you will be referred to an educational psychologist (EP).

The EP will assess the child in each of the following areas:

  • Phonics - can your child hear and reproduce phonic blends?
  • Reading – does your child read fluently and accurately?
  • Comprehension - can your child read a text and answer specific questions about it?
  • Writing - does your child write fluently, accurately and legibly?
  • Memory - can your child retain and readily recall information?
  • Processing speed - how long does your child take to absorb and act upon what they have learned?
  • Maths – does your child understand number and time concepts?

You will receive verbal feedback on the day of your assessment followed by a full report identifying your child’s strengths and weaknesses. The report will contain recommendations based upon these findings.

Following issue of the report we sit down with you to review it. We explain any unfamiliar technical terms and ensure you understand the implications of its conclusions. Most importantly, we give guidance on what options are open to you to help ensure your child thrives in mainstream education.
